Favorite silent movies?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your favorite silent films, guys? Does anyone else here even watch silent films? I sometimes feel lonely about my love for them...

Sorry anon but I've never been able to. I can put up with a lot of old-fashioned stuff but silent movies are just a bit too far. The lack of dialogue is just too much.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (Especially when it's a late night screening inside a Lemington Spa church with live piano)

I keep meaning to watch more. I really enjoyed The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari but I haven't seen nearly as many as I should.

What are your favorites? I could use some recommendations. I like the idea of horror and fantasy in silent films but I'm definitely open to others to.

Only one I ever watched was Metropolis. Science fiction movie in like 1920. It was really kick-ass, though. I liked it a lot.

That one's been on my list forever. It was even on tv the other night but I was doing something else instead of watching it.

I want to see that, but the library only has some version that was re-released in maybe the 80s where I heard they added new music and color filters and I'd rather see something closer to what 20s audiences would have seen.

The imagery in that one is awesome. Really powerful, though it dragged a bit for me halfway through.

Metropolis. Nosferatu. Some shitty ones whose titles I can't remember but were hilarious. My dad and I used to watch them when I was younger (also hilarious sci-fi movies like Attack of the Gila Monster).

I have no interest in silent dramas, but I adore every Buster Keaton movie I've ever seen.

Hey, nonny! I like some silents movies. They may get boring imho, but I watched a few from start to finish. I liked a romantic movie with Vincent Price, and action movies with Fairbanks (sp) - Zorro and Three Musketeers. I've tried to watch Robin Hood, but color tinted footage really irritates me. Like when it's violet colored indoors and orange colored outdoors.

Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights."

Anyone who can watch that and still claim that silent movies fundamentally can't portray meaningful interpersonal interaction as talking movies can bite me. That last scene ;_;

Modern Times. I identify way too much with the main character--he makes the same kind of mistakes as I do, and is just as oblivious about them.

Side note: I just discovered this movie is on Hulu. HOW?

I tend to prefer the comedies -- Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, etc. But Metropolis was really fantastic too.

Most of Fritz Lang's: Metropolis, Nosferatu, and M.

(I'm more a 1930s movie fan, myself.)

I too love silent movies anon!

Besides the ones mentioned on the thread already, It (with Clara Bow) was very cute, even though I'm not normally into romances. (I just really like Clara Bow in general.)

Nosferatu and Phantom of the Opera.

The Sheik is a guilty pleasure. So problematic, but damn, Valentino was fine.

Metropolis. Saw that as a kid on tv and it freaked me out but i just loved it *so much*.
And so many of Charlie Chaplin's shorts. And the original film made of Alice in Wonderland, which is just slightly creepy but still really fun.

Caligari, Pandora's Box, any comedy especially ones with Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd.
