It occurs to me, though, that my parents had 6 of us so money probably didn't stretch as far as it could. It wasn't until I was a teen that our situation changed and there were times my parents had trouble covering the bills and at least two times when we couldn't afford to buy groceries for the week.

Well, we had food in the pantry. Just not much of it. My parents were never really good with money. They had huge debt from a couple failed businesses and tons of back taxes.
