DA - Well, the act of "being a fan" requires nothing more than loving something - you fall for something in your youth, you can say you're still a fan of it years later even if you haven't participated in the fandom. "When" could imply you stopped being a fan at some point, too.

At any rate, it probably has more to do with people not being fabulous spellers and the sticky way your brain can cling to certain wrong spellings.
