Posting a completed work all at once, especially in a large fandom, means that it won't find as big an audience because it quickly gets buried by everything else.

Yes, this is a good point: it accounts for the fact that so many fics which are trash collect tons of kudos while masterpieces disappear with a minimum number of kudos. I hate this phenomenon, because it means that you cannot use either the number of kudos or the number of comments as an indicator of the quality of a fic. Seriously, it makes me itch for a -1 kudo button sometimes...

But then again, most people have learned to filter out WIPs which has the advantage of tremendously shortening your read list in popular fandoms: it's particularly easy on AO3, though much harder on other platforms, I'll grant you.
