Pitting characters against each other
(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)I hate the common fandom reaction of pitting characters against each other. You know the one where the fans are all "My favorite is superior in every way." I most often see it with female characters who exist in the same work (or just the same genre) or every time a character gets replaced there will be fans hating on the new character simply for not being their old favorite.
Why not love both if they're similar? Is love a limited resource? Can't you let different characters be different without declaring one better than the other?
Re: Pitting characters against each other
And just because characters are similar does not mean you like both of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Pitting characters against each other
... But I pretty much stopped doing that myself when I realized that some of my friends were fans of characters I pitted against others. I realized the practice was absolutely stupid when I inadvertently hurt the feelings of someone who I had quietly respected way back when I was in the 'Mass Effect' fandom. Ever since then, I've tried my hardest to not engage in the practice. I'll admit, it's *really* hard not to try and find ways to "bite" back when someone disses your favorite character to make theirs look good... but I find it's a matter of knowing when to pick your battles and whatnot.
(Especially if it's pitting love interests against one another. Have people stopped pitting Aerith and Tifa against each other in FF7 fandom after so long? I'm afraid to look deeper)
