Pitting characters against each other

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Warning rant ahead:

I hate the common fandom reaction of pitting characters against each other. You know the one where the fans are all "My favorite is superior in every way." I most often see it with female characters who exist in the same work (or just the same genre) or every time a character gets replaced there will be fans hating on the new character simply for not being their old favorite.

Why not love both if they're similar? Is love a limited resource? Can't you let different characters be different without declaring one better than the other?

Because people have a favorite thing and they want that thing to be better than your favorite. Does not happen to just characters. The same goes for jobs, house, car, clothes, makeup, friends, romantic partner, book, movie, video game, etc.

And just because characters are similar does not mean you like both of them.

I do it because other people do it. If a bunch of people put down my favorite to bolster theirs, I can't help starting to think of counterpoints that lead to me hating their favorite right back.

Because it's way easy to make whoever you like look better by making everyone else look like awful than actually discuss the merits of your favorite character on their own.

Arguing is the only way I feel emotion.

I'll admit, I used to do this frequently when I was still fresh in fandom. While I can't describe it exactly, there's a certain satisfying quality in feeling like you BTFO'ed a character you don't like at the expense of uplifting your favorite...

... But I pretty much stopped doing that myself when I realized that some of my friends were fans of characters I pitted against others. I realized the practice was absolutely stupid when I inadvertently hurt the feelings of someone who I had quietly respected way back when I was in the 'Mass Effect' fandom. Ever since then, I've tried my hardest to not engage in the practice. I'll admit, it's *really* hard not to try and find ways to "bite" back when someone disses your favorite character to make theirs look good... but I find it's a matter of knowing when to pick your battles and whatnot.

(Especially if it's pitting love interests against one another. Have people stopped pitting Aerith and Tifa against each other in FF7 fandom after so long? I'm afraid to look deeper)

The hardcore Lagertha stans in the Vikings fandom constantly did this to Aslaug. Man, Aslaug isn't my fav character on the show but she's grown on me and I also love Lagertha but some of these people are just... they got a lot of hate. Which is hilarious to me, because Lagertha and Aslaug have reconciled their differences on the show and actually get along now, lol.
