I've never seen it, so I'm very willing to admit that this is wrong and unfounded BUT

the impression that I've always got from hearing about it is that it's sort of... contemptuous of its subjects. Like, "ha ha, look at the ridiculous poor people being clowns". Again it's just the impression that I've got from hearing about it & I hope that's not a classist reason for disliking it, but it just seems very distasteful to me.

This is really interesting.

I'm wondering if there's a way to represent people like this that wouldn't make everyone think they're being mocked. Would it have to come with a dozen disclaimers every episode about how the family knows they're weird and there's nothing wrong with how they are? Because I think you're right about people assigning shame.

That's really interesting! And really cool, actually. Thanks for setting me straight.

I definitely see where you're coming from watching the video. It's way more charming and fun than I expected, and more positive. And when you think about it it's not really surprising that the culture around them would assign shame that way. Incredibly frustrating, but not really surprising.

ETA in response to your post above: I hope I didn't come off like someone who just wanted to bitch about the show! The show isn't something I would have commented on in the ordinary course of things, I was just curious about the difference between the impressions that I'd got and your take on it.

Wow, that's pretty bad. It's so transparently elitist and classist and culturally superior and so... unquestioning and assured and unambiguous about it. Like, there's no trace of doubt in their minds that looking down on this show and the people on it is the right thing to do and that the rural poor white culture is unacceptable trash. "If you're going to root with pigs you're going to get stains that won't go away". Good lord.

And it's really kind of an endemic attitude in a lot of ways, thinking about it. I often think that attitude or a similar one is one of the reasons the Democratic Party can be such a disappointment in a lot of areas. I don't know, maybe that's extending things too far, but I definitely get why it's frustrating.
