Random Identity Crisis incoming.

[personal profile] morieris 2014-08-03 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm beginning to think that my interests are juvenile. I wear pop culture shirts (Pretty much exclusively, Usually referring to movies, never memes), I collect MH/EAH dolls, I'd rather watch a cartoon than live action, though some of my favorite shoes are LA too)

You ever feel that what you are and what you like is just...really lame...I don't enjoy these things any less, it just hit me.

nah. everybody likes things. I don't see how one thing is "lamer" than any other thing.

I don't. but that's because most of my friends do the same or similar stuff as me and some of them are much older than me (10+ years).
ALways remember that not only are there older nerdy/juvenile hobbyist people than you, some people who are way older actually make money with those juvenile fandoms. Also, old people love playing with little model trains and collect dolls and nobody bats an eye.

That's true. I'm in some online doll communities and I am probably the youngest one there. I'm still in that 'not sure of myself' part of my life I suppose (I'm almost 22).

That hit me a few years ago when Opeth's "Watershed" came out and I hated it so much and I was so tired of metal in general and I realized just how stuck in the 90s it all is. That sort of started pushing me away from the shit I was into in my early 20s. After a brief hipster aesthetic phase (and a major, MAJOR depression) I pretty much dived right into the retro/electronic synth pop thing and have no plans to leave.

Yeah sure, but I think it's fine as preference as long you occasionally branch out to other things.

I feel like everyone enjoys at least one thing that someone else would call juvenile or dumb. It's not worth letting yourself worry about it; you like what you like and that's fine.

I don't care if you like MLP or Opera, it's attitude that makes one mature, not interests.

I have an identity crisis every few years, I'm not even kidding. It's not that I dislike my interests, but I sort of dislike my clothes, my hair, the general way I am and feel the need for change.

I don't really get it with thing I love, though. You shouldn't feel bad about those.

I do, whenever someone new comes into my apartment and sees my DVD collection.. only to find it's 7/8s anime. The looks I get, since I'm in my mid-thirties.

I bought those when I was in my twenties and DVDs were shiny and new. I still love the shows, so why part with them? (I've already cut my collection in half, just weeding out things I bought and didn't like.)

What helps is remembering all the joy and memories they bring me. Also, I was a nerd when that wasn't cool, so I suppose I'm just carrying on my childhood legacy. XD

I don't since I know there's plenty of people with the same interests at the same age and way older than me.

I only start to feel upset about it when I connect it to my unemployment.

I don't, I like what I like and anyone who has a problem with it can shove it.(I've had people trying to make me feel bad about liking 'childish' things for years and I have long since stopped giving a fuck).

I occasionally feel like that for similar reasons (I like anime, prefer cartoons in general to live action though I do watch a good bit of LA stuff) but I generally I feel like people are allowed to enjoy different things and if someone else has a problem with it it's their problem, not mine. (And just because something's for adults doesn't automatically make it better, anyway. In high school my older sister used to tell me to "grow up" and stop watching cartoons, and watch soap operas like her. At the time my favorite show was Gargoyles, which was probably better written and acted than a lot of her soaps. Just because it's for kids doesn't mean it totally lacks merit.)

Sometimes, but then I think, "Well, what am I supposed to like then? What's supposed to be appropriate for my age?" Being a 30 yo female, I guess I'm supposed to like sappy romance novels, 50 Shades of Grey, the Lifetime Network, foodie stuff, fashion stuff, crappy DIY projects, scrapbooking, artsy fartsy films, autobiography books,... But I hate all that stuff. I like video games, comics, zombies, and stupid Youtube vids. I'm not gonna give up the stuff I like because the stuff that I'm supposed to like is boring. Oh well.
