It's also annoying because it leaves out subjects that require a lot of hands-on learning or fieldwork that you'd have a hard time getting without an academic connection (or a degree you've already earned) and it certainly wouldn't be free.

The public libraries in my city do not have laboratories or MRI machines or radio telescopes, etc. and if you wanted to get permission or grant money to conduct some kind of research, no one is going to accept "the library" as a backer/oversight body.

Everyone should read more, but just like with learning to drive a car, there are some things you only really learn by doing.
