Its book 1 of a fantasy series involving magic which isn't about white-european type ethnicity or culture. Its protagonists are PoC, and so are the antagonists; but they are PoC from a different ethnicity yet again. Even within the protagonist's culture we see different versions of it, and different sub-categories of that ethnicity. There is an interesting take of polygamist marriage and male and female status too. It is a very different type of fantasy novel.
