I guess it depends if the torture-porn is really shallow and cheap-feeling, or if in spite of being graphic and porny, there's still a big focus on the character's personality and situation and feelings and thoughts while it's happening.

Basically, it has to feel like there's a reason it's a fanfic written by an actual fan who cares about the characters rather than some original story off of literotica or something.

Oh, yes, totally agree on that. I want some actual characterization. I want to see the psychological aftermath. I want to know what the character is thinking. I just want a bit of graphic first.
