I guess those people see it as, well, it's not like you're consuming any resources to make the thing you want them to make.

What is this logic? If I provide the fabric, pattern and thread, they should do the work for free exposure??? No sense at all. Biggest cost in anything is TIME. Try hiring a plumber, and they'll find that out.

Hahah, or an auto mechanic. What's really scary is, I have a friend who's actually been doing web/graphic work freelance for awhile now, he finally decided to go to college and get a degree and certification and such. So he's taking graphic design courses, and in one case? The INSTRUCTOR assigns them projects that are actual JOBS. As classwork. So not only are they not getting paid, they're paying tuition to do real design work for real clients.

Since he's already been doing this work for awhile, he immediately was like "WTF IS THIS?", but a lot of the other students thought that was perfectly reasonable. So I was like "You know, as much as I hate to say it, I guess it's sort of preparing them for what it's like to be a professional designer... clients will always try to find a reason they shouldn't have to pay you." -_-

Like I said, I am SO fortunate that I got hired by an institution that pays by the hour instead of having to do the freelance thing.
