Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of dandruff?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-05 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
For reference, I have very, very thick, wavy hair, and my dandruff is very flaky.

Head and Shoulders. I also have thick hair and used to have some terrible dandruff. And it takes a bit of time, but H&S fixed me right up. I still use it.

1. Wash hair in the sink (rather than in the shower). You'll be nedning over the sink with your hair flipped forward into the sink

2. Don't wet your hair: instead, pour the shampoo into a plastic glass, dilute it with warm water, and then pour 3/4 of it on your scalp (focus on wetting the scalp with the liquid, especially if you know where your flakiest patches are).

3. Lather, focusing on your scalp and the roots of your hair.

4. If you can, just stand at the sink for a few minutes, then pour the rest of it over your hair, lathering down toward the ends.

5. Massage your scalp a bit more, then rinse. (If you are at a kitchen sink with a sprayer attachment, use that -- again, starting at the scalp. Back of the head and neck, then then front.)

I found that this method loosened more of the stuff from my scalp, and also rinsed out more loose patches than washing my hair in the shower or tub.

I'd recommend getting a chlorine/chloramine filter, especially if you have dry itchy skin as well.

Try rubbing (gently) a few tablespoons of mayonnaise into your scalp and leaving it in for 30 minutes to an hour. Gently wash it out, then use shampoo as normal. (Hopefully this isn't the case, but if this makes your scalp very greasy, you may need to shampoo twice.) The "diluted shampoo" tip that other anon suggested would work here as well.

If you're showering in super hot water, lower the temperature to warm.

Coal tar shampoo.

Neutrogena makes a really good one that works well and is not too expensive.

try head scalp scrub like a Korress scrub? And don't let your conditioner touch your scalp, ude it only on hair. Good luck.

Is it dandruff or dry scalp? Yes, there's a difference! Though most stuff sold in pharmacies/department stores isn't going to differentiate.

I have dry scalp, and the one I found that works the best is T-Gel. I think it's called? It has some tar in it or something weird, and it kind of smells like tar. But it's honestly been the only shampoo that has helped with my dry scalp.

Yes! That's the coal tar shampoo I mention upthread: Neutrogena T Gel; it's the only thing that works for my psoriasis.

It depends on why you have dandruff. If it's dry scalp, then a moisturizing shampoo should be fine. If it's because of fungus, then buy shampoo that has tea tree oil in it. It's a natural anti-fungi and will get rid of it if used every time you wash your hair. I thought I had just dry scalp and H&S didn't work, but after the hairstylist told me to use the tea tree oil shampoo it went away. Bonus: it has a nice tingly feeling when you use it!

Is it just me, or does tea tree oil smell like gasoline to anyone else?

We have an essential oil kit, and I use the tea tree oil for skin stuff, but it smells so bad to me.

I think I am alone in this; nobody in RL agrees with me. LOL

I find it has a strong musty smell. Reminds me of the way our basement used to smell in our old house.

I can see that.

Nah, I love tea tree oil but by itself, it totally smells like butt. It's best when diluted or mixed with other things.

So glad it's not just me!
