this secret totally makes me feel better about the fact that I erase a canon black girlfriend to ship two white characters together. Especially given how much shit I've gotten for it on tumblr…

Erasing characters that "get on they way" is really common on most fandoms and imo that's better than bashing them, so *shrugs*

I guess erasing isn't the right word. Normally I just have them amicably break up (usually due to changing circumstances) and then get my ship together. She still appears, but as a minor character more so. And she's still friends with everyone.

I do like her as a character and I've actually read some really good fic featuring her. I'm just WAY too invested in the other ship, unfortunately.

I prefer that, too. I hate bashing fic so I prefer it when it's an amicable split. One time I read a fic that described the canon relationship "fizzling out" and I was like yessssssss, perfect. I hate it when fic writers break up the canon couple by just unrealistically "revealing" that the "interloper" is abusive/racist/asshole. I want everyone to get ALONG.

Yeah, I'm that way too. If fic starts depicting her as a manipulative shrew, then I nope the fuck out of there. I've also noticed that the quality of the writing is directly related to how well her character and the canon relationship is handled. So if they're broken up unrealistically or she's made OOC, I just close out of the fic. Experience has taught me that the rest of it won't be of good quality.

Yes, I like that, too. The fandom I'm in often breaks up one particular canon couple to ship the man with dudes, but the girlfriend is very often present, a good friend to both, and the brains/heart/conscience of the operation. I like the canon couple, but can live with this.

Although I friend-ship Abbie and Ichabod HARD, so I want them both to have other, non-dead or undead, romantic partners.

That's a good thing to do - vastly preferable to making someone evil. I've had canon characters I wanted put aside in favor of a ship, but I can't stand fic that makes someone evil just to accomplish that. Heck, I'd rather see someone tragically killed off or their existence ignored than Sudden, Inexplicable Evil.

It's always unforgivably OOC when it happens, too.
