Re: Cover letter

Definitely research the company you're applying for. Enough to address the correct people (usually in HR) and briefly mention something you know about the company, a summary of your relevant work history (and/or degrees if fresh out of school) and what your skills will bring to said company. And get the name of the company right :P (I'm not saying you won't, but sometimes if you're applying for multiple companies, it can be easy to mix it up).

Thank the people and say you hope you can discuss... uh... something... in more detail (sorry, I've been out of the job-searching game a couple of years... current internet examples will help you better here), and that you look forward to a favorable reply. Make sure names and addresses (theirs and yours) are in the proper places. Keep the cover letter to one page or less. I don't know what the recommended amount of paragraphs was, but I tend to stick with three. Follow 1-inch margins and all that. SPELLCHECK. Attach resume/CV and/or application, whichever is appropriate.
