It's a vicious cycle. You can't tell teens or 20-somethings what to do, even if it makes perfect sense, because they won't listen. I didn't listen either. You just have to trust that eventually they'll grow out of it.

Specifically about girl-on-girl hatred, even with movies like Mean Girls being popular it still happens unfortunately. I think it becomes a turning point when you're old enough to realize we should be helping each other in order to get rid of that ugly perception that people have of women behavior.
