Re: Disappointments in your favorite recent fandom obsessions

They may not have explicitly made it female, but the comparison - and nothing to refute it - has left most people assuming the dragon was female. And I get that difference between "eating dragons" vs "feeding dragons" - it's just the whole "every nest has its queen...but this one is the king of them all!" that really felt kind of off. One of my friends I watched it with laid it out pretty well, that it looked like someone, somewhere, said "Oh no, we left a female in a position of power/in charge, quick, fix this!" It's one of those iffy things that, on its own, wouldn't bother me, but in context kind of...slides in the wrong direction. That said, going off direct statements in the movie alone, I can kinda see your point.

However, I still go by sudden damsel in distress syndrome. This woman has spent almost two decades riding dragons, and literally danced across the backs of multiple dragons, hundreds of feet in the air...and I'm supposed to believe that in the midst of a dragon frenzy, she suddenly can't fly and needs to be rescued by a man who has barely been riding dragons for a quarter of the amount of time she has? And I definitely can understand that fighting from the backs of dragons is very different from fighting humans - so the fact that Valka needed Stoick to rescue her from Drago? Understandable. The fact that she was cowering, scrambling away, and didn't even try to make a move to defend herself or strike Drago - that pissed me off. Given both the way she's been described in the previous movie and the show, and how she was introduced here, that was just overkill in making Stoick and Hiccup look good.

She could be a supporting character and still be her badass self (look at Astrid in the first movie). That said, if she is a supporting character instead of main cast, then so is Stoick - yet half her sudden Damsel in Distress moments were about making Stoick her rescuer, not Hiccup. If you're going to suddenly Damsel-ize a character to make the main character look good, that's one thing (still irksome, but at least makes narrative sense). Damsel-izing a supporting character to make another supporting character look good? Not so much.

But Stoic wasn't her rescuer. He was just as useless in that battle as she was. And she was specifically being targeted by the enemy because she had established herself as the biggest threat there.

Uh, yeah, he was? First he had to rescue her when she fell off Cloudjumper, and then again he took on Drago when he targeted her.

And she was one of the people being attacked by Drago and his Alpha - and they were after Hiccup and Toothless.
