I can only assume when people say they don't look Japanese enough, they mean "They don't fit the squinty eyed, round faced stereotype in my head." Now, the fun if trying to figure out if that is a sjw comment or a skinhead comment

I really hope that comments like that wear down closer to the film re: Hiro is not """Japanese enough""" (and the fact that he's getting a Face Character).

I don't really get comments like these. You don't see any possible range of features between "literally Hiccup and Rapunzel" and "bucktoothed WWII stereotype"? None at all? It's just either of those two things, full stop?

Gogo on that poster looks like a good in-between to me. But if they all looked like that, people would still be mad because they could still be considered having "othering" Asian features, and why can't they somehow be clearly Asian without being clearly, you know, Asian? Haters have no logic.

You're right, I hadn't seen her before. She looks pretty okay. I guess I haven't been keeping up all that well.

I mean they don't have to look like offensive caricatures to look Japanese or distinctive instead of like the same previously-used characters wearin different wigs you know? I'm not even a hater, I like Disney movies. It's boring to look at and slightly troubling how so many people are trying to refute the "they look white" argument with "So what, you want them to have SQUINTY EYES? That's what makes Asian people different from white people right??"

Hiccup, really? FFS that's grasping for straws.

Actually, I was just looking up the movie to find the name of the main character of How to Train... because that guy in the corner looks like him (from memory anyway).

I've yet to see anyone explain specifically how Hiro should 'look more Asian'.

Probably because it would be racist as fuck if they attempted to do so.

The character looks almost exactly like the character from How to Train Your Dragon to me. Does that character "look Asian"? I get what you mean but you can recognize racial diversity in features for a reason so there are some features that are typical in Caucasians and some features typical in Japanese people.

This. This is what I came here to say.

It's not racism to acknowledge racial diversity in physical features. It is racism (or maybe just plain tasteless) to describe atypical Asian eye shape as 'squinty eyes'.

I've no horse in this race, but I've seen tutorials of how to draw a variety of East Asian characters, specifically their eyes, without the bullshit "slanted up squinty" stereotype (that's actually not accurate). Hiro's eyes don't have the almond shape with the dip at the upper outer corners that I usually see in those tuts, which I think is what some people mean (though definitely not all).
