Maybe it's just cause I've had a long day, but I have no idea what this is trying to say.

It took me a moment too...and I'm still not sure...I just kind of waited for comments.

Oh, good, glad I'm not all alone.

Yeah, same here, and I'm too tired to try to make sense of it.

I don't either, and I've read it several times.

I thought I got it for a minute... Then I finished reading and went, “Wait, what?” So idk either.

(Haven't read the comic, know jack shit about the film, but I saw a trailer before Guardians and think this looks adorable and hilarious. So... I'm kind of looking forward to it now, but I'll stay away from the fandom. It sounds like a huge mess.)

Disney haters are mad because Disney changed the races of some comic book characters from Asian to white. They also left two Asian and made one black. In the comic, everyone was Asian (Japanese), and according to the haters they should have left it that way. I disagree and argue that it would be more racist to keep them all Asian, because they would all be the same race, and in a movie made for and by Americans, their race would easily be mistaken as white.

nayrt
Ohhh. Thank you! That was very helpful, I was so confused.

how the hell is it racist to have all japanese characters in a film for american audiences? japaese americans exist. and they are severely underrepresented in media.

it would have been amazing if they made a single film without a white character. even PatF they had lottie the rich white girl to be tiana's best friend, when they could've given her a black girl from a rich successful black family without having to change much.

Because Americans don't see Japanese characters as Japanese unless they're Asian caricatures. They see them as white. Anime set in Tokyo full of characters with Japanese names: "But why do they look like they're white?" or, if they're watching an English dub, even "I forgot they were Japanese" (yes, really).

Yeah, but "audiences might have a racist reaction to this choice" =/= "the choice itself is racist".

(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
...okay? that's the audience being racist. what the heck are you even trying to say here.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
That Disney knows its audience, and I would be more willing to bet that keeping the characters all uniformly "Japanese" would have been acceptable only because they knew the audience would think the characters looked white.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
i don't agree with that at all but okay.

Fred is the only character that we even know is white. Honey is voiced by a Latina actress, and considering that everyone else's voices match up with their ethnicity, I think there's a decent chance Honey is Latina.

That being I wonder if these people realize how racist the source comic is.
