Most people agree that the guy being black is acceptable. He's still POC, and it'd be cool if he was black AND japanese, since people seem to think mixed race individuals don't exist unless they're half white.

it's pretty skeevy as fuck that they made TWO out of the six pretty obviously white, and i'm annoyed as shit that people keep acting like disney deserves a bunch of praise because they have three poc in this film. disney didn't do anything really that progressive, and they didn't do anything to deserve praise for. i like disney, but really, guys.

at the end of the day, despite how much of a stink people on tumblr kick up about the newest disney films, there's 3 times as many people willing to defend disney into the ground, no matter what stupid things they pull. unfortunately.

I've seen a few people angry that the whole cast isn't Japanese like the source material, so not everyone agrees that having different POC is okay.

And IA. I've been staying out of it mostly (outside of reading what other people are saying) and people will defend Disney no matter what they do. Despite what protests go on, there's probably still going to be huge amounts of people that go see it anyway (which, regardless of my feelings about a film I wish people didn't just go see anything a major company puts out, this is why things don't change.)

I didn't say they did anything that progressive? Just that keeping it the way it was wouldn't have been progressive either. They're not working from a progressive source, I think they made it a little better. they could have made it a lot better, but why list pros and cons when you can exaggerate every little "could have been better" into "skeevy as fuck"?
