Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
(the fic for reference- http://archiveofourown.org/works/102205/chapters/140454)
Just saying. I can understand being wary if like the OC gets with the MAIN character and it's the focal point of the story, but...I don't see why ANY canon character can never paired with an OC EVER EVER EVER.
I'm not saying that everyone should HAVE to enjoy it. But I don't think ALL canon character x OC automatically means Self insert.

Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
I was just replying to the other person who said it automatically meant self insert. It's one thing to say "I don't like to read that" it's another to say "the author must be basing the character off themselves."

Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
*shrug* I suppose. In my experience I've managed to find quite a few gems. Different opinions and all.
Also I find "it must be a self insert" accusations to be tiring. Like "GUYS, you can make a crappy character without basing it off yourself".
Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
Yeah, completely. I don't toss that accusation, mostly because in one sense I believe that almost every character winds up being fueled off something in the author anyhow.
(I love original characters iun original fiction: I just personally don't care for them in my fanfiction unless they are bit parts moving the plot along — which is how I generally use OCs myself.)
Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
Well I can understand that, totally.
and yeah I agree with you, about characters. I know that if I get deep enough into any character of mine, there's something in there that's mine. Something that I can get close to and understand when I write them.

Like I can see how someone assuming that a lot of self inserts will be Mary Sues (although I don't believe Mary Sue=/=Self Insert ,just that self inserts can be hard to pull off) and being wary. But I don't get the idea that a character with Mary Sue tendencies is ALWAYS based off the creator automatically.
I figure it's just something that some people say to be insulting and scathing. "Ohh you have an OC, they're probably a self insert who's hooked up with your favorite guy" I guess they think it's a good insult or something but IMO it's really dumb.
