Pretty much me & all my fandom crushes.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course you can. Just be a fictional character and have the creators make a new character to be a perfect match for you in every way (IE, the same way Ben Wyatt got made).

Okay, no, enough sarcasm, I do get where you're coming from.

Except they didn't plan on Ben being the perfect man for Leslie? I think they decided that he would be a love interest for her, but it wasn't until they saw how awesome Amy and Adam were together that they realized they'd not be able to top Ben.

Plus, he's not *perfect* for her. She thinks he is, but she would probably be better off if she had someone who was slightly less indulgent of some of her more flagrant flaws.

I love both Parks and Rec and Ben, but eh, he's not perfect either. He can be a bit cold when telling people their towns are going under financially (Pawnee in S3, Eagleton in S6), and he... actually, that's the only example I can think of off the top, but I'm sure there's more. I do agree he's close to almost unrealistically perfect though.

SA - and I do realize this was probably a joke. Just adding insight. :)

Well, P&R is the kind of show where everyone is wonderful and supportive and loving, even when they're a tool.

But I'd say that if he had "flaws" it's that he's socially awkward, uptight, and sort of standoffish. But he's the straight man to everyone's crazy, so he doesn't really get to showcase some of the things that "crazy" characters like Tom or Leslie get to.

I've felt like this about fandom crushes before. What you have to remember is that he comes across as perfect because he's fictional. Real people are never gonna be perfect.

Yup, very true. (And even when they don't come across as perfect, watching them on screen is a lot different than having to put up with their shit IRL, lol.)

Oh yeah. There are a few character that I love who I probably wouldn't irl.

There are a LOT of characters I love that I wouldn't like irl, some who I wouldn't be able to stand at all.

My partner actually IS that perfect. Coming up on eight years now...

He is also as big a nerd as Ben Wyatt. And as short. (Girls, do NOT overlook the short boys!)

i relate to every pixel of this secret

To be honest, secrets like this depress me more than the show does. It makes me feel like maybe reality does suck if so many people prefer fictional worlds. Don't we always argue that there are limitless types of human beings? The idea that even with that, a fictional character is just better is so depressing to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that fictional worlds are better. It's that in a fictional world, it's comprehensible that not only does a person like this exist, or but you'll find them and there'll be mutually attraction and you'll work everything out.

The limitless types of human beings is all very well and good but it's a little hard to hold on to when it's merely a theoretical possibility, if you follow me.

Eh, look at it this way: he appears perfect because he's a character written to show only or mostly good sides. It's like seeing a picture through a tiny window. You're seeing a person through a small lens. If he were real, he'd be just as imperfect as anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Zis is true also.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, anon. Neither will Amy Poehler.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not familiar with the fandom, but I have a similar problem... finding a man even more amazing than my biggest fictional crush, and then finding out someone beat me to him years ago.

I guess that's kinda-sorta proof they're out there if you know what you want and aren't so wrapped up in your fictional crush that you ignore everything else or are constantly comparing everyone else to said crush. But like everything else, nothing's guaranteed and sometimes life is just life.
