Even if I was new to Doctor Who, I'm not new to TV or media in general. I would likely assume the lead is male, simply because it usually is most of the time. I may not like this, but it doesn't mean I'm ignorant of statistics.

I wouldn't. I never assume anything's a given. Just because something's a statistic doesn't mean it's always going to be true, and I'd rather go into something and see what it's about than guess. Or look it up. Eh.
