I don't know this specific fandom, but IA with the sentiment. A lot of the time it just sounds really weird, stiff, and phony -- like they're using the first names just because they think they're supposed to, not because it's a sign of greater comfort. Because in cases like these, characters usually refer to each other by last name due to being so used to using their last name that the last name is they name they automatically attach to the other person. Last name use is almost never due to ~formality~ or some shit. The last name generally just holds more meaning and is more closely connected to the other person than the first name. Like Mulder and Scully -- each of those names mean a whole lot more to the other than "Fox" and "Dana" because the last names are what they were using the whole time they knew each other (also Mulder hates his first name but that's going on a tangent...)
