As many people have said, you have to understand the rules of grammar and language before you can make a stylistic choice to ignore them. If you don't actually know the rules, then that just makes you ignorant.

ee cummings is a poet and it was a stylistic choice. Bell Hooks is an entirely new name to me - I just Googled her, and I see she's listed as an author among other things, but I'd really only expect to see poetry discarding capitalization and punctuation. Does she write like that? I can't imagine reading a whole book (or even a whole article) like that - it would drive me crazy.

While I don't discount it entirely, I tend to have a low opinion of writing that relies on on stylism, especially when it doesn't appear to actually help. Reading ee cummings, I don't see what was gained by lowercasing everything or would would be lost by upper-casing it. But people consider it extremely disrespectful to post/write about his poetry using capitals, so I avoid it.

bell hooks is a feminist author who has written and said great stuff. But she also requests that people not capitalize her name, because somehow capitalizing her name takes attention away from her writing/makes what she says more important. I want to respect her wishes for how she is presented by other people to the world as a matter of principle - but not capitalizing a proper noun, and a name at that, is extremely grating (and irritating because by default I capitalize names, then I have to go back and change the case on her name). So the only way to do both is to avoid reading or writing about her as much as possible.

With ee cummings, I suspect it was just that he stood out from the crowd by not following the rules way back when, so the stylistic choice had more effect. Now, with everyone posting from phones, etc., there's a million and one people not using correct grammar, punctuation or capitalization, so it doesn't jump out at all. It grates, yes, but that's an entirely unintended effect. :)

Re: bell hooks. Thanks for the explanation - I can't say I really understand the logic at all, and it does sound somewhat pretentious, but okay. Whatever floats her boat, I suppose.
