Sure, it was a big deal. But then Otacon never called him by that afterwards, even when they weren't on missions. I'm ok with it in post-MGS4 fics where Snake has asked Otacon to use his real name because he wants to live as a normal man now or something. But even then, let's not forget that this is the same guy who responded to Emma's dying wish for him to call her by her real name by saying "What's wrong with E.E.?". Anyway, the main problem I have is, as I said in the secret, when they use their real names with no explanation. Like he's secretly been calling Snake "Dave" for years, even though we know for a fact that he hasn't.

As for Snake, I have to completely disagree with you there. By 4 pretty much everyone except Snake calls Otacon "Hal". And Snake even calls him Otacon to people who have no idea whom he's talking about. I think after 9 years, calling him Otacon is kind of like a term of endearment if anything, and it's also a symbol of everything they've been through together. If he started calling him Hal I'd see it as a step backwards in terms of intimacy. Especially considering the last word we've ever heard Snake say was "Otacon..." in a choked-up, emotional voice.

With other ships, again, it's fine with some explanation. But I think it's weird without some, especially if the characters are already very close and stick to last names more out of habit than any desire to remain distant or formal. Like the eponymous character from Samurai Flamenco, who continues to call the dude he lives with and wants to marry by his last name. Or, as other people have mentioned, Mulder and Scully.

Wait, shit, is it? And here I thought I couldn't ship them any more than I already did.

Yeah, in the voice-over bit right at the end of MGS4. He says it after Otacon assures him he'll remember everything he was, and stick with him until the end.

And here I thought I couldn't ship them any more than I already did.
Haha I know, right? It's the only pairing that sometimes overwhelms me with how hard I ship it. I feel like such a loser but I actually burst in to tears when Sunny mentioned hoping they could get to Jupiter while Otacon's still alive in Revengeance.
