But there are excuses:

-CR is a piece of shit that deserves no money
-Stream quality is awful
-A week is too long, the internet is full of spoilers
-Some translations aren't good

Downloading > streaming.

Stream quality is awful

The hell? What streams are you watching?

I assumed that by saying "excuses" rather than "reasons" they were poking fun at all the HQ ANIME ONLY!!111 PURISTS out there.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you blind? Even HD streams look like shit compared to 720p downloaded episodes.

Maybe. I do have myopia, though that's not really applicable here.

Either way, while I notice a huge quality difference with live action and 3d animated stuff, I've never really seen to much of a difference between 720, 1080, and high res. Even 480 is totally fine quality for me, although I will admit the lines in 720 are definitely sharper.

I have laser-corrected vision and they look fucking fine to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Not everyone has great internet connections or computers. I've never had a stream that was even close to the quality that I can get if I just download something. I would much prefer a legal way to download then to stream, as streaming tends to vary day to day in how cooperative or good quality it will be.

Like I would pay money (not just ads) to be able to download more (subtitled) anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I was wondering this too. I stream from Crunchyroll and it looks fucking good on my 50' TV.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not gonna touch the rest of it, but what exactly is wrong with CR? I use it and it's been consistently high-quality.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They used to make money taking advantage of fansubs before they went legal.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Just like many illegal streaming/downloading sites still do.
(And let's not talk about manga reading sites, obvs)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
They've made some pretty egregious errors in their subs lately.

One Haikyuu episode recently had something like, "And I'll get you the COMMERCIAL BREAK"

like someone literally left in "commercial break" for some reason.

They also have translation errors quite a lot.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And geoblocks/only available for certain countries. Finding a work around is too much of a pain.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how is that relevant in a secret about people in USA who, you know, don't have to deal with geoblocks all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol I guess that part of the secret escaped me.

But I do think there are series on CR only available in Europe and such.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Streaming is always inferior.

Wow, that was the most pretentious garbage I have ever seen in my entire life. People take this shit waaaaay too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually mad??????????

I'll assume that that post was a joke/troll..

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you mad? Everything that pic is saying is true. Sure, the style is too aggressive but I'm sure whoever wrote it did it on purpose as a joke.

Basically that is the point of macros like that. Why else would the ad hominem be there. The whole thing boils down to, "I have better taste in things than you, let's see if I can get u mad about it with a chart".

If you regularly browse anonymous boards and other places, you tend to get used to the ribbing and tone (lighten up even), but not so much if you don't regularly inflict that on yourself.

Why would you waste so much time making a list of reasons why people who do media differently are inferior and moronic? That's pretentious as hell.

The chart alone would be fine. The text? bleegh.

I'm actually really pleased with CR's stream quality, but I've only recently been able to get the app to work for me. Before it wouldn't load any videos and would ask if I wanted a subscription. :/ (I'm not sure if it would work on my computer at all; some of those streaming sites lag or freeze my browser.)

The ads are really damn annoying (five times during a 22 minute episode is kind of ridiculous), but... It's doable, I guess. Just don't like waiting a week because I'm impatient (And you're right about spoilers).

I don't care how other people watch though; if I couldn't find something the legal way, I'd download or stream somewhere. I would rather download actually (because... A week is a long time!) but I'm paranoid about that kind of thing and try not to unless I have to.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
the ads on crunchyroll drive me insaaaane. The last time I was watching on CR, I watched a 24-episode series (skip beat, I believe) and it showed me the same. damn. ad every single time. I saw that one ad over fifty fucking times. I was really losing it. It was about a sandwich or a burger or something... I can't remember what business it was for, but by God I remember the actor's faces and the shrug the one guy made. I memorized the lines of that ad. Never used CR again after that. I'd rather just pirate it for now and buy the goddamn dvds later if I like it. If I see that ad ever again I'm gonna flip, I swear.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-08-09 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I sympathize. I've only watched around ten episodes on crunchyroll so far and I swear I've seen like 25 commercials. I too have memorized them and want to punch something everytime one plays. If they weren't so frequent I wouldn't mind, but it's distracting as all hell.

I wish anime was easier to find legally, and faster. I still don't know if the Tiger and Bunny Movie is ever getting released over here, and I am not paying $100 for a movie that will only work on a region free player.

CR isn't the only streaming site though. A lot of their simulcasts are available from the production companies' own websites, like Funi and Viz. Plus other site like Crackle.

About the only issue I have with CR is their player that will sometimes bug out and tell me an episode is over. Other than that, unless I feel like making gifs or silly web graphics, I don't actually have a need to download 1080p mkvs of most everything. (Besides to keep up with convos I guess?)
