I thought he was a massive asshole to everyone in this movie and in all movies he was in?

Also, I think I once read a story that one of the other actors (can't remember if it was Donald O'Connor or someone else) found Reynolds crying because she could do some dance steps or something as well as Kelly wanted her to, and helped her practice backstage.

I think it was Fred Astaire who is supposed to have found her crying.

No, he was a dick to everyone in this movie. HOWEVER, he was a prince in other movies. For example, in Cover Girl, lead actress Rita Hayworth was having an awful time with her then abusive husband. Kelly came to become her protector on set. Nearly coming to blows with the husband when he got in between them. Hayworth remained grateful to him for the rest of her life. His other co-star in the movie Phil Silvers said Kelly was one of the best co-stars he had ever had. And the two remained good friends until Silvers' death.

The problem with Kelly was that he was a severe workaholic and a perfectionist. If you were the same, he loved you. If he thought you were in anyway slacking, he hated you. There was no middle ground with him.

Yeah, unfortunately Reynolds was simply not up to par with Kelly's talent, and it showed. He was obviously too hard on her, but it wasn't about him being a dick on set.

The problem was that Reynolds wasn't a professional dancer. She had enough talent for the role of a plucky chorus girl trying to break into theater, but not enough to satisfy Kelly who, in addition to being a perfectionist, had more experience at dancing at that point than Reynolds had experience at breathing. Of course, Kelly's strategy of berating her on and off set is still pretty dickish.
