That's basically what I do. Sure, I will check out some of the new stuff that comes out every season and go through my backlog of older shows, but I mainly focus on manga.

Same with me, anon. I find, with a bit of digging, manga definitely is the medium with the more variety and the gems here and there, and it doesn't even depend on the genre. Historical, politics, psychological thriller, heck even for romance and BL there are more variety, and thought-provoking titles.

People would laugh if I say this, but even some shoujo manga and BL titles are thought-provoking, though my favorite shoujo and BL mangas have a quiet, contemplative mood to them. And I know I won't ever see them as anime because they're not 'on trend' or don't have enough selling points like sex or fanservice-y stuff.
