I think it's because people want a show about geek culture that's not quite so canned - and BBT stands out because there aren't a whole lot of shows about geek culture. Personally, I enjoy it, but I could understand why people think that it could be better.

Yeah, and I also get the sense it laughs more at geek culture than anything else. For example, I know a huge fan who was afraid of his son growing up to be a geek. For real. And if that's the sort of audience it's attracting I can see why people would be annoyed. But that's just my impression.
