People were treating it as the nerd sitcom for nerds, when it's really the nerd sitcom for people who like to laugh at nerds.

Given the number of jokes that non-nerds don't get, it's more like the nerd sitcom for nerds who don't mind laughing at themselves, which many... do.

The sexism is a whole 'nother kettle of fish, but since I'll take BBT levels of sexism over anything Seth MacFarlane's churning out, BBT is still the default sitcom when visiting the family.
