You seem to have left out the part where Kino replies to Marle "Ayla very stong." Oh, and when Ayla tells Kino she likes him best.

Why can't the relationship be a romantic one with elements of parent/child? Yeah, it's a little weird, but it doesn't make the relationship any less valid.

Honestly, I don't think this is something everyone is deluding themselves about, or something the developers pulled out of their ass at the last minute.
