So, I finally went and made a tumblr, because there are some people in my fandom that I want to follow. I wanted to customize my theme, so I navigated to the "theme garden."

...you have to fucking PAY MONEY for the shit in there? Are you fucking kidding me? And people are obviously paying for it, because otherwise, it wouldn't be a thing. The cheapest theme in there is $19. $19. That's a week's worth of vegetables. That's two tickets to my town's music festival, or two tickets plus drinks and popcorn to a matinee. That's two meals at Denny's or Friendly's. Why the fuck are people paying that much for blog themes, especially when not that long ago, you could get blog themes for free?

I was under the impression that there free themes on Tumblr? I know my own theme is free.

Also, most fandom platforms I've been engaged with for the last several years have also had free and paid themes. LJ comes to mind, but I'm pretty sure it's not the only one.

ETA: Also, where do you live? Last time I went to a non-3D matinee show two tickets were $15 and even the smallest popcorn was no where near $4. $19 would only cover a week's worth of vegetables for one person. o.O

There's plenty of free themes out there, and people even take some of the themes and customize them. I bet if you search themes on Tumblr, you'll find a ton of them.

There are free themes in the standard customisation tab and if you look through the theme tags you'll find ones that users have made and give out for free. I'm currently using a non-tumblr custom one as I don't like any of the free themes very much.

Lots of free themes out there sis, offered both at tumblr and by people who make them. Try googling "free tumblr themes" for starters.

Like everyone else said, there are free themes, but tumblr's customization page is terrible and they don't make it obvious. Probably because they're hoping to trick people into paying for stuff.

Like has already been said, there's also free themes in there. A lot of them actually.

Besides paying for premium themes, blog skins, etc. have always been a thing. Graphic and web design are actual businesses where money happens, since about forever.

You can also pay a live breathing human person to set it up for you. Amazing isn't it, the market of digital goods?
