ElfQuest was kind of a concentrated wankstorm vortex, though. I kind of side-eye the Pinis, because they always had some sort of drama swirling around them - at least, back when I was following EQ, which is admittedly, quite a while ago. I think I finally fell off the wagon completely post-Shards.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the whole Wavedancers controversy. I think since Richard was on the EQ mailing list, he kept that wank storm out of general knowledge. IIRC some Cease and Desist letters were sent around to quell it, though don't quote me on that. I did end up buying the mini-series the original Wavedancers writer/artists published about their experience, though. I have it in a box somewhere.

I read EQ through the graphic novels, and didn't discover that the new comics were being published until almost the ending of the Shards/New Blood/Jink/whatever Ember's spinoff was. I kept reading through New EQ, with the different storylines all in the same magazine, like a mini manga phonebook. Then THAT ended, and so did my reading. I think the final quest is finally being put out online, though I haven't read a page, and I missed the whole Red Masque thing.

EQ helped me overcome my disdain of comics, so I can't give up on it completely. I still have all my GNs and single issues. I even found a copy of Fantasy Quarterly.

Yes, Wavedancers, and then there was some wackiness going on between Richard Pini and Colleen Doran. I remember him trying to explain the controversy to some magazine, and Colleen Doran's response was along the lines of not even wanting to engage, but she just wanted them to leave her alone. I vaguely recall (but cannot accurately quote) what I thought to be somewhat trollish behaviour by Richard Pini even on their own mailing lists.

In any case, I really loved the original graphic novels, and it was my first exposure to comics (Betty & Veronica excepted). The follow-ups I liked, but slightly less so. But I feel like there was this point where the series was on the cusp of actually expanding into something much bigger - Wavedancers was a part of that - but the Pinis would not/could not relinquish control, and instead of evolving, their whole universe just kind of sank back into a status quo at best.

I've thought for years they should forget about the ElfQuest movie they wanted to make - someone should give us a behind-the-scenes tell all, because I think it would be fascinating.

I just googled Colleen Doran and A Distant Soil and remembered hearing about the whole mess here on f!s at some point. It does seem Richard is kinda...grabby, on occasion. The wiki article about ADS lists some references to zine articles from the 80s. Interesting.

I agree with your 2nd paragraph, and why things fell apart. Either the Pinis should have kept only one story going under their direct control, or gone with all the different ones and learned to delegate. *sigh* But the shiny movie distracted them, and then that even happened.

TBH, I lost interest in the movie when they bragged that it would be CGI. I much prefer traditional animation. And then that preview image they released of Cutter gave him FIVE FINGERS. *headdesk* Makes me kind of glad no film ever came out of it. :P

BTW, my library happens to have A Distant Soil. I just requested it. C:
