I don't get multi-shipping, and I think those who multi-ship are being a bit pretentious, or even trying to provoke other fans.

How are they trying to provoke other fans? Or in any way pretentious? Like, I can understand you if they're being obnoxious about it, insisting that everyone should multiship.

What's not to "get"? A person can think A/B is utterly adorable, but also like A's dynamic with C and think they'd have an interesting relationship, but then there was that one scene last episode between C and D where the sparks were absolutely flying, and after seeing that one fanart on tumblr the other day, they've realized that B/D is panty-meltingly hot.

Alternately, there's, "I'd never want to see A/B broken up in canon because I love them and their romance to pieces, but in AU fic where they never got together? I'm really into B/C. Their friendship is amazing on the show, and I always wondered,'what if?'"

I don't see what's pretentious or provoking about any of that.

No, wit me it's usually when I like one character so much, I like to explore them in several relationships.

This is how it is for me too. Usually I have one character that I ficus on and that I proceed to ship with damn near everyone.
