Trek is literally a fetishist's playground. It's the perfect setting for fanfic too -- just have the crew encounter a new planet and violà, you can indulge in any kind of kink you want.

It'd be cool to see the guys doing this as well, like you said, but I'm not surprised that this role has been confined to women.

Yeah it's super fucking weird seeing characters getting what are basically Space Handjobs and women using Space Handjobs to get favors and everyone being fine with it

Yeah, it was pretty creepy and gross. I guess you could argue that in Ferengi culture it isn't creepy and gross, so blah blah blah, but yeah. It's shady.

But the thing is, giving a hand job to a guy as an attempt at manipulation is creepy and skeevy, yes, but also ridiculously inneffective. You can't just walk up to the manager at Olive Garden, start groping his crotch and then say, "... so you're going to comp my meal for free, riiiiiiight?"

Because he's probably going to call the police. Now, tere's a slim chance you'll find a guy who'd agree to this deal even with such a clumsy approach, but then that strikes me as more of a quid pro quo thing. Not un-skeevy, but consensual.

I guess from a Ferengi perspective, it's not that weird, since - as I recall - they're supposed to be kind of sex-obsessed and it's not like they cover their ears or react badly when people touch them - they even stroke them themselves in public.

They may also have really odd expectations about women.

I vaguely remember hearing that most or all Ferengi women never wore clothing (that was one reason why they were never see off their homeworld.) If they were always nude because the Ferengi men wanted them that way it might follow that the only way a Ferengi woman could get what she wanted is through (sexual) bribery.

Yeah, Ferengi women are basically property, aren't allowed off their homeworld, and they don't wear clothes because clothing women is considered lewd. Quark and Rom's mother, however, was basically a Ferengi feminist in her old age and started wearing clothes whenever she wanted, owning property and making money (through secret bank accounts). It sounded like things were starting to improve for women there by the end of DS9, from a very low base.

It helped that Rom was a closet socialist and the old Grand Nagus was starting to see the value in letting some of the poorer Ferengi get money to spend.
