Have you ever sent fanmail?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
To a celebrity or someone else famous? How did it turn out?

YES. I'm actually going to do it again in a couple of days, so this thread made me remember it and feel stupidly happy.

I wrote to David Pirie, a screenwriter of Murder Rooms and the author of the Murder Rooms novels, asking if he had any plans re:future (literary) canon. He wrote me back and was incredibly nice about it - to the point where he gave me a few post-canon spoilers. I recall feeling some lingering happiness from this reply for a month straight.

That's so awesome that he wrote back and was so nice about it. :) Are you going to write to David Pirie again, or did you have someone else in mind this time?

^_^ Indeed! I'll just write to him once again, yes. Maybe he'll even remember me.

You're one of the Murder Rooms anons, aren't you? Hi :) Admittedly I'm a little torn, because, while I'm not hellbent on keeping the spoilers in question to myself, I would prefer to avoid posting them in a public space. If you have a DW/tumblr/twitter account, I'd rather use PM.

When I was eleven, I sent an e-mail to Katherine Kerr, a fantasy author, whose Deverry series I absolutely adored. I think I knew I was pretty young to be reading her books, so I dropped my age in the e-mail, hoping she'd be impressed. She never answered, lol. I don't know how famous she is that it's possible she never got around to reading my e-mail, or maybe I just made her super uncomfortable, I don't know. I checked my e-mail every day for weeks, hoping she'd reply but she never did. I got over it. Eventually. haha...

She might have felt uncomfortable, if you were very young. Maybe you should try again?? :)

Given how batshit she went on her fans a few years ago in defense of Diana Gabaldon's batshit opinion on fanfic, it's possible that she hates her fans.

ayrt

What? what's this? I haven't looked into her since I was eleven. And I'm 25 now. What'd I miss? omg

I have, and he wrote me on twitter and mailed something back. That was pretty sweet.

I was thinking about writing to Florence Welch. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to though. ):

Gillian Anderson, as part of a large group of X-Philes that was sending her letters. She wrote a thank-you letter to the group with "bug hugs"[sic] for all of us, which became a running gag for a while.

Not super well-known, but Elyse Sewell from the first season of America's Next Top Model had a livejournal and at one point she said anyone who sent her a postcard would get one back. So she sent me a postcard and it was super random and awesome.

One of my friends wrote David Soul (Hutch from Starsky and Hutch) and received a very nice letter in return, back in the day. I always kind of felt embarrassed writing anyone, because what could I say to them that they hadn't read over a billion times?

One of my friends recently left a review on one of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files novels, and he responded to her through the review blog, and was very polite to her regarding her writing. Oh, and I also wrote a review of a mystery writer's novel, and he and I carried on a correspondence for about a month or so, because I reviewed the novel in fandom terms, and he had a lot of questions regarding why I used said terms, and why I had problems with his novel (as I recall, his female lead was prefect enough to be a Mary Sue, and I referred to her as such, as well as using a few other common terms, but I don't think it had any affect on his writing).

I handwrote some individual fanmail to send to the cast of Stargate SG1 after it was canceled, but I never mailed it.

I sent an email fanletter to Keith RA DeCandido. He replied and was generally a lovely human being.

I mailed paper letters to my favourite idol group (B1A4), not expecting a reply if they can even understand my lousy Korean, lol.

Sent a sandwich-critique fanmail to Diane Carey where the meat of the sandwich was "Please consider using the word 'said'. When every dialogue tag is "Character X grunted" "Character Y gasped" "Character Z gnashed" (SHE USED FUCKiNG 'GNASHED' AS A DIALOGUE TAG) it's hard to take your writing seriously." No reply. Wasn't expecting one, lol.

Yes. Dean Koontz.

I'd finished a book a few months ago and realized I'd been reading him since I was 15 years old. That's seventeen years I've been reading him. So I wrote him that to thank him for that.

He was VERY nice and sent not only a handwritten note back, with my name saying he hoped I'd still be reading him when I'm 64, but also a signed copy of another book he wrote. It's one of my prized possessions.

He gets very busy, but I've heard he's very receptive to hand written fan mail, if anyone ever wishes to write him.

When when I was 10, I wrote a letter to George Clooney, asking for Chris O'Donnell's address. Not surprisingly, I never got a reply.

I really liked this Big Fish Ensemble song, and I couldn't find it streaming on YouTube or even anywhere to dl, so I commented on the band's MySpace (yes, yes, this was the Pleistocene era) asking where I might find the song, and one of the band members just emailed me an mp3. Super nice.

When I was 11 I sent a letter to Drew Lachey from 98 degrees, and got a very lovely hand written letter back from his grandmother. We actually corresponded a few times. I'm sad I didn't save those, they're comedy gold on my side, I'm sure.

My dad sent fanmail to CJ Cherryh back when everyone was left in a cliffhanger between the 3rd and 4th books or whatever, to ask when they'd get the final book...and he wrote it in T'ca (like, the matrix that can be read 6 ways). Apparently got a personalized reply for that, so it pays to be creative. XD

I don't know if this counts but I have gotten some very nice letters back when I wrote fan mail to several authors I liked but they weren't famous authors. I also got an autographed pic back of John Larroquette when i wrote him a fan letter when he used to be on Night Court.
