Adding to this, Masaaki Yuasa is another anime director who focused on the experimental aspects of animation. Tatami Galaxy is my to go to rec of his, but his most recent series Ping Pong is worth a shot.

Seconding Satoshi Kon, but from the sound of it you've already seen Perfect Blue. His Tokyo Godfathers is very far removed from it, if you're feeling like try something else of his.

And Mamoru Hosoda's stuff avoids a lot of unfavorable things about anime. I like his Wolf Children most.

But if you're just done with anime and would rather bother with stuff you know you'll like, that's fine too.

Thank you for the recs. I will probably keep trying anime periodically. So many people like it, I really feel like I'm missing something.
