It looks good on a resume, basically. Employers feel better about hiring you if they know you'll do unpaid work, not because they plan on shortchanging you or anything, but rather because that probably means that the paycheck isn't going to be the only thing on your mind.

Sorry about your bad luck, though. I'd say keep at it, and keep applying to places. Make sure your resume stands out a bit, too.
