Eric Cartman - queer coded, yes or no?

Nooooo? Not really? Because it's like a wraparound joke?

I just don't even know anymore. South Park messes with my head these days.

No, because his ambiguous sexuality is used for comedic effect to the point where there's no longer any coding, it's just a gag.

I'm specifically thinking of an episode right now where he tries to start a "funny" trend of taking pictures of himself with his sleeping friend's penis in his mouth, he realizes that could be construed as gay (read: embarrassing), and then spends the rest of the episode trying to figure out a way to get the pictures back and pretend it never happened.

...no? Well, maybe Bisexual, but he's never actually had any feelings towards men. So man trans? He dresses up as women sometimes, and he thought the Butter's dick pick wasn't 'gay', so...

Ignoring the Butters thing, I think his obsession for Kyle could be construed as a really, really, really extreme version of pulling somene's pigtails.

Especially in 'Cartman finds love'.

Cartman and Kyle have a kismesis. It is real hate... it's just sexually charged hate.

'Kismesis'. Never heard that term before today! Good description.

It's a homestuck term.

I think the correct term for the relationship is "kismesissitude".

Surely, as a character, Cartman's psyche is such a mess that it's impossible to tell whether he's had any feelings or not for anyone anyway.

Could well be bisexual or trans. It seems like some of his behavior is his actual self coming through.

Perhaps bi-sexual, but I don't think he's particularly queer coded. Though Matt and Trey have gone on record saying that the most likely boy to be gay/experiment is Stan, so...

But he idolizes Mel Gibson and Hitler...

He's a fecking awful person, there's no denying that. Does that preclude him from being either bi or gay though? He would not be the first homophobe who was actually in denial.

He's not, he just does gay things. And he's 9.

Nah, just a narcissist and a sociopath, with no real ability to love anyone or have a true sexual desire toward them (all the pranks on Butters and acts of humiliation on Kyle don't count, and I even question his girl crushes).

There is no such fucking thing as queer coding, Jesus Christ.

Re: Queer coding in South Park

Uh, yes. There is. It comes from the Hays Code/Motion Picture Code which regulated what could be shown in movies from 1934-1968. Comics had a similar code from the 50s until 2010. Anyway, if you wanted to have a gay character in one of these movies you'd have to do it in a way that abides by the code. So, effeminate men, evil man-hating lesbians, and if they weren't villains, it would have to be made clear that their life had a tragic end due to the "choices" that they made. Watch some old movies. Some of them even have messages stating that the actions of the characters are not to be condoned, etc. It's not just lgbt themes that were censored. I think it's had lasting impact on our culture and our movies/TV.

I don't really think Cartman falls under this category, though.

You should watch the documentary The Celluloid Closet.
