*sigh*

My mother has been looking for a new job for a while. Her current job was stressful (but payed awesomely).

She finally found a new job and quit her older job (of 15 years).

Today was her first day. And her boss just called her to tell her she would be losing her job tomorrow. Apparently the VP of the company was fired so all his contracts were nulled and she should have never been hired in the first place (she accepted the job 2 weeks ago).

So now she has no job. :(

Anyone else have terrible news?

Wow, what the fuck. She should definitely apply for unemployment and...try to find out if that's legal?! Did she sign a contract?

Re: *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah she signed contracts. Not sure what they said about firing and such. : / She is going to talk them about laying her off instead of firing her so she can try and apply for unemployment.

Re: *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
She should apply anyway even if they say no. They might accept her.

DA

This. If she signed contracts, but was fired before she had a chance to work, even EI isn't that heartless to turn her down, especially if this is the first time she's collected.

If it's an "at will" state, then it's perfectly legal, regardless whether a contract's been signed.

That's horrible. I'm sorry.

Over the course of my masters degree I have worked my ass off through a lot of life drama and health issues. Tomorrow I have my finals exams - the very last exams of my masters degree, and I'm just - done.

I haven't revised. I've barely done any of the work. I'm going to fail spectacularly. But I'm just - done. And I know I'll live to regret this, but there's just nothing left in me to give.

I'm very sorry to hear about your Mum's job, anon. That sucks absolute balls.

Can you postpone? Get a sick note? A legit one, sounds to me like you have a case for exhaustion....

Re: *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, my University is bureacratic as all get out. I've already had to postpone the exams once due to pneumonia. If I postpone again I get kicked off the course, regardless of reason.

Yeeeeouch. Maybe just try a *little* reviewing? An hour or so, and an hour or so tomorrow? You might remember more than you think...

No. You get your ass to that exam. you write something down on that goddamn paper. No matter how bad you fail, at least you finished the goddamn thing (also can you re-take next year?)

Unfortunately I don't have the money to go back again for another Semester. Yep, I'll probably do that. At least then it will be done. Thanks for the mini-pep talk, noodly.

Honestly, university isn't for everyone. And I wish society and employers were more accepting of that. I'm not saying to give up on your masters since you've come this far and you're in the home stretch. Might as well suck it up and just get it over with. And I understand certain fields require master degrees and BAs, but not everyone is cut out for careers like that and some people just want to open their own small business with no aspirations of becoming huge, just successful in their part of the world. Maybe take a year off, recollect yourself, explore different opportunities, and figure out if what you're pursuing is what you want or maybe there's something else out there you haven't discovered that might be a better fit for you. Either way, good luck.

I wish someone had told me this 40 thousand dollars ago. *sigh* But yeah, if you need to take some time off and have a small dream - that's okay, too, OP.

What... I'm so sorry, I really hope things work out for her.

Re: *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Can she go back to her old job? Or have they replaced her?

This is why you don't burn bridges when leaving a job. Not that your mom did (I'm sure she knows better than that), but you never know what will happen.

Re: *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't burn bridges (she went to church Sunday with her supervisor!). But she really does not want to work there anymore. It was a very stressful job that made her hate people. She worked in loans. : /

Can she at least get a good reference from them? If she has that, she'll go a long way. Plus, networking. Networking helps.

I'm so sorry. I hope she finds another job soon.

My bad news: I recently took a blood test and I found out I have scarily high cholesterol that is probably a side effect of one of my medications that is known to do that. I'm so sick of trying to find the right medications for everything but it looks like something's going to have to change again.

wow that fucking sucks. I'm sorry to hear that, anon.

I guess I have some bad news but it isn't anywhere near as bad as that. Found out that a co-worker who I'm pretty sure dislikes me though I don't know why is being promoted to shift leader. The idea of working long shifts with her in charge is kinda awkward. :/ just another kick in the pants though to look for another job.

Re: *sigh*

My medication's side effects are almost worse than the initial condition. I STILL haven't heard back regarding the scheduling of an interview, and I haven't had a good night's sleep in almost a week (I'm either sleeping 3-4 hours or 10-16).
