It relies on what I would argue is an outmoded and false understanding of the distinction between the false, casual, outward appearance and the underlying hidden authentic truth that must be discovered. So actualizing is a process of drawing out that which is latent and bringing possibilities into being and hidden interiors into the light of day where they can be seen.

So like, coming out, but broader in subject matter and application, not restricted to queer people wrt their sexuality?

Yeah it comes from a similar point of view I guess. Except with coming out it's more conscious - in that generally you make a conscious decision to act one way to hide what you know to be your true self, and a conscious decision to change - whereas I think the thought process here is more that it's hidden elements which you were unaware of and that emerge spontaneously.
