Tony Stark (more comics!Tony than movie!Tony) is basically an evil guy from an evil family. He grew up as a billionaire war profiteer for whom everything was always easy. When he had his life-changing experience, he realized that he was a bad guy, and resolved to become good.

But he doesn't know how. He's never known any good people before. That's why he bankrolled the Avengers and gave them his mansion, because he wants to hang around good people and try to do what they do.

Alcoholism is a great metaphorical problem for him to have, because it really is one day at a time for him. Every day he has to get up and NOT try to take over the world. He has to resist the urge to say things like "The petty-minded fools! I'll show them! I'll show them all!" Sometimes he relapses.

Proof: the character has had to be LITERALLY rebooted from backup more than once because he turned into an evil shadow dictator.

Isn't this just...canon? Except he wasn't "evil" so much as just kind of a bad guy.
