Those names you listed are pretty common last names for white people too.

what would really help is if they could give us some examples of ones they think aren't

Nowhere did they specify it was just about Americans. You remind me of that interviewer who referred to Mandela as African American.

Yes they did.

They refer to 'black people' but then they say "most of them (the American ones, not the ones with actual African names)". Ergo, it's just about Americans.
