To clarify, I meant that for ME PERSONALLY it would be difficult to interpret his character any other way.

I've been able to headcanon multiple contradictory things for characters because I could interpret the character as either. Just not with this.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm trying to be very, very gentle here...

Headcanons are awesome. Nutty headcanons are also awesome. But if this is the only interpretation you take away from The Remains of the Day, even if it's just your personal headcanon... yeah, there's a lot of the story you've just plain not understood.

Which would be totally okay except that if it's for a class you might have some difficulty with passing exams.

NA. Yeah, I agree about your note about passing exams but the way I'm interpreting what OP has said is kind of like what happens to me when I see a parallel in an old book to a contemporary issue, or see parallels between two characters where it's very unlikely one is based off of the other. Once I've mentally made that connection it's hard to unsee the parallel even though I know that it wasn't the author's intention. It's just something that keeps seeming more and more fitting whenever I think about it. I suppose it's a form of pattern recognition firing on its own.

That would have been helpful to specify, since otherwise it sounds like you're passing judgement on what other interpretations people can have (which is where people get annoyed about head canons).

I still agree with everyone saying you're missing the point, though.

DA

Although it seems like this headcanon, if true, would make some aspects of the character's story a helluva lot less tragic, so I kind of wish I could buy into it.
