What to do when people around you start aping Fox News...

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone I've known since high school just shared this article (http://nationalreport.net/ice-bucket-challenge-contributing-california-drought/) on their facebook along with an earnest call for people to stop wasting clean water. And, after being called out for citing a satire site, insisted until blue in the face that this really was about the water wastage issue (seriously, out of all the complaints about the ALS challenge, the one about water scarcity has got to be the richest yet).

This along with the recent crop of posts on my feed from previously-sensible people suddenly freaking out about Ebola like veteran anti-vaxxers... it's all got me very :\

Okay, I'm just going to go ahead and say it - there's nothing wrong with freaking out about Ebola, because Ebola is a freaky ass disease. That shit is scary.

It's dumb to think that there's any real chance of catching Ebola. But even a miniscule chance of catching Ebola justifies freaking out about it. Fuck Ebola.

Ebola is damn scary. That's true. It's something from a horror movie, really.

And if you don't even live in a country with any known case of Ebola?

Well then I suppose you should try to keep your freaking out to a reasonable background level. But still.

You do realize with commercial airlines that diseases can pretty much spread all over the globe very, very quickly?

Which is why most airlines have canceled their flights to the African countries affected for the time being.

What anon above said. Also many countries have set up airport screening points to closely monitor arrivals from those few flights that haven't been cancelled. And if you actually read up a bit on Ebola, you'd know that it isn't actually a disease that easily spreads very, very quickly, at least outside of Africa. Its own deadliness works against it, for instance.

Online? Block the post and move on.

Offline? Tell them you don't agree and the points behind it if you want to discuss it. If you don't then say you don't.

I'm a big fan of better living through killfiles.

Weep and begin to dig a grave for your faith in humanity. Alas, there are no other options.
