Oh, but don't you know, all the cool kids have (self)diagnoses these days so why not let them diagnose characters in the boooooooooorrriiinnngg old crusty books they have to read?

I only ever got away with something like that in one of my college lit classes when I had to read At Swim Two Birds and I wrote a bit on how I thought the main character had synaesthesia because the way he talked about colors and numbers sounded like he might have it and it was such a weird book anyway. My prof loved the idea because it was a new take on the book he hadn't heard over and over and that was the ONLY reason he let my attempt at ass kissing by going over the top slide.

During a class discussion in my high school class for "The Tell Tale Heart" there was also talking about how the main character may have been affected by mental illness. But no with the implication that anyone who brutally murders someone did so because they were mentally ill (or vice-versa), but being preoccupied with the thought that someone's eye is evil isn't very normal.

Our teacher had no problem with it and even made some contributions. And he had taught at Amherst for a while before teaching our class.
