He's also obsessive to the point that his interests preclude social interactions and he's utterly unable to maintain meaningful relationships. Even for being English I could still give Asperger's a pass.

Although if you want my real opinion, Stevens isn't English at all. He's actually acting extremely Japanese. Stevens is the author's way of proving there is a cultural allegory between his own Japanese roots and his English upbringing. It's an exercise in breaking down the xenophobic cultural superiority complex he has likely encountered in his life time for being both half-Japanese and a second generation immigrant.

But that's honestly a topic for a whole paper I wrote on the subject rather than a few livejournal comments.

I'll be honest, I haven't read it in ffffoooorrreeeeevvvvveeerrr. And I think I only read it when I was going through my EM Forrester phase and someone suggested it to me as a similar author. I could write entire books on Howard's End, though. I reread that one a lot.
