How I Met Your Mother is a giant daydream of the life Colonel Young wish he'd had -- him being the Marshall of the group -- before getting sucked into the military and then spat across the universe.

(I used to say Marshall grew up to be Young, but not even my head could wrap around that head canon o'discrepency.)
