I absolutely adore this book (and yay, Ishiguro secret! I do love him so, even if he likes to shred my heart slowly into little pieces)

Hoeever, I must admit I didn't see what the OP saw - I saw a man who had by the nature of his social position, job and the overall repression of the society he lived in become so alienated from his own feelings that he could barely admit them, and stifled them to his own detriment for many years.

Indeed, i might even go so far as to say that was the whole tragedy of the book.

I might go so far as to completely agree with you. I haven't read the book in years, but I still remember how sad I was when I finished it.
