Thanks for preventing me from doing a secret like this myself. I'd have been a hell of a job.

BTW, non-yaoi/yuri lover =/= homophobic.

Two guys interacting for more than three seconds =/= love.

That'd be obvious, why is it so hard to understand?

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly! especially since it never happens with het couples.

...ohwait...

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto. Didn't you get the memo? Guys are not allowed to be friends or enemies, even. They all have to be doing other guys; 24 hours a day, none stop.

Truth be told, I think shipping is pointless and boring. I'm only interested in canon and random icons.

PREACH IT TO THE CHOIR, ANONYMOUS.

I agree with this anonymous.

Seems like all fandom is about now is SHIPPINNGGGG

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters have been reduced to salt and pepper shakers. Like seriously, it's just, who goes with who. I don't get the obsession.

Re: 27

[identity profile] thanatoast.livejournal.com 2007-12-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like the only way to analyze characters has become shipping. Who goes with who, who would do who, etc. There's a lot more to fandom than shipping, people, though it doesn't seem like it any more >_>

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
The funny part? Once the who goes with who becomes canon, they cry fowl, that it ruined show/book series/etc. Or that the powers that be did it wrong! Esp if it doesn't match the ship they had in mind. (I dislike the term ship too.)

Re: 27

they cry fowl

DUCK!

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, in fandom, sometimes it does feel as if "if you don't like yaoi, you must be homophobic." It's because such a stigma that I feel uncomfortable stating it.

Thus the annoymousity of this comment here.

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a gay friend who hates yaoi and slash for various reasons, just think of the angry statements he gets from yoai/slash fanbrats.

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
The question is, does he get them (anymore)? Because I can totally understand if he's given up at trying to explain himself. It's like hitting a concrete wall. That is now armed with bazookas.

Out of curiosity and if it is permissible, what are those reasons?

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I can explain one of them.

Many of the people he has met who are into yaoi and slash have this fantasy world version of what being gay is like. (Lots of yaoi and slash fans that he has met are like this.) It's like saying Harlequin romance novels are realistic relationships.

He got annoyed with them at anime conventions to the point he doesn't even try to explain anymore, even though it really grates him. Sorry to say girls, but being gay isn't all about sex. And some gay guys don't like that kind of sex at all. This really miffs them and messes up their view of what they think being gay is. This one girl got extremely mad at him for explaining what it was like for him, because it was nothing like yaoi or slash at all, it was like he shattered her fantasy world or something. I was like O_O when she got upset.

Re: 27

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's... holy shit, a little extreme. :| I feel sorry for your friend. :( ♥

When it comes to yaoi for me, actually, I like both yaoi AND RL gay stuff. Erotica/romance/drama, blahblahblah, you know. It's so hard to come across Harlequin romance type of novels for man/man. :'(

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
It was crazy. And not mention, awkward, cause she really yelled and called him a poser. O_O;;; It still confuses me to this day.

I was like:
slash and yaoi!=!the reality of being gay
your fantasy!=!canon

Sadly, some of the rabid ones can't separate the two.

-- Secret #27 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was never a great fan of yaoi myself, but there is 1 yaoi pairing that I kind of like though I think I am more on the side of "male bonding" in their relationship not male!buttsekks, and that's Kira and Athrun in Gundam Seed.

But back in 2000, when Gundam Wing was aired on Cartoon Network and a mass swarm of fangirls hopped on the internet to rant about their hate for a certain pacifist queen, yet were completely enamoured of all the Gundam pilots, it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to express a view of non-yaoi preference without getting your head shot off and then proceed to have it mauled to pieces by a mob of angry bigoted fanbots.

This secret was expressing something I've kept inside a long time, a secret of how I was angry at those fangirls for making the 1xR fans hide away and feel the need to justify themselves at every turn. Since then I've never really been able to get along with yaoi fangirls, most get a certain view of you the second you say you don't ship yaoi, they will most likely not want to talk to you about fandom related thing because you won't squee over butt!sekks between all the male leads with them... I've rarely to never come across anything yaoi that suggests anymore more than a huge plot device to get them into bed together.

Admittedly, I haven't read anything fanfic wise for many years... but really, seeing how people reacted once again I am not surprised nor regret dropping out of fandom and simply enjoying series for what they are and not potential fanfic material all the time.

Re: -- Secret #27 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
But back in 2000

and

This secret was expressing something I've kept inside a long time,

wow. you've been holding this venom in you for 7 years? that's pretty toxic especially since it's just fandom and not like real life.

how did you expect people to react? come on, these kinds of things are hardly even worth fighting over these days until someone directly and intentionally (as you have done) comes wading in with your gross overgeneralizations.

we were getting on just fine until you shit in our cheerios and now want to chastize us for being upset that you did?

Re: -- Secret #27 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
No I haven't been "holding on to it", I was just reminded of it recently and I wanted to get that anger I once had out there to people who I previously used to hide it from.

Isn't that what this thing is all about? Secrets you've not been able to express previously but now willing to do so in full force? Now I can anonymously tell all those yaoi fangirls what I really thought of them back then. I really hold no great opinion of yaoi nor non-yaoi fans these days, I no longer participate in online fandoms.

This community wasn't about everyone happily getting along and agreeing on everything, it's about secrets-- secrets are generally so because they have the potential to hurt or upset someone should they ever be known. I won't apologize for simply doing as I was encouraged to do, if you are offended then you should remember why you are here in the first place.

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when GW was aired on YTV. I was totally digging 1xR, honestly. It's all I wrote and "SHIPPED". I never got the whole HAET ON TEH PACIFIST QUEEN OF TEH EERTH AN COLONEES. But whatever, yeah.

And honestly? :| I never once came across a yaoi fanbrat during my old years of GW fandom.

Re: 27

[identity profile] attaining.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
And sometimes in fandom it does feel as if, "if you do like yaoi, you must hate het and be a rabid idiot infatuated with nothing but meaningless sex." The OP testifies to that.

For every yaoi fan that uselessly cries "homophobia!!" there is a het fan uselessly crying "oppression!!" Let there be a happy medium, and both sides, just relax. The level of het vs slash varies fandom to fandom, but rest assured that if you really dig straight people, in larger society (the really important one), you will never, ever be oppressed.

Re: 27

[identity profile] dreamcatcher.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Let there be a happy medium, and both sides, just relax.

Agreed. I was trying to figure out what bothered me so much about this whole ruckus, and it finally clicked.

There are all these big, loud 'caplocks of rage' on either end... but they are the minority. The majority of us are happily moseying along with our 'shit and let ship' attitudes. We just don't have all the wanky airplay.

But us happy-go-lucky shippers on either (or both) sides are here. Oh yes. We are here.

Re: 27

[identity profile] attaining.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed~ I like het, slash, femslash, and gen fic, too. XD If characters have chemistry, that's all I need. I can see Buffy/Spike just as easily as I can see Spike/Angel or Buffy/Faith. I don't really care who 'ship what. XD

Re: 27

(Anonymous) 2007-12-09 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
Male and female interacting for more than three seconds =/= love.

Het fans also have problems figuring that out.
